Chapter Eight

Troi was outside one afternoon, working on the paver walkway he wanted to install running from his pool house to his patio. As he worked away, he enjoyed the quiet afternoon, the breeze, and, mostly, the peace. Stopping to wipe his forehead with a cloth, he glanced up to see a red-tailed hawk fly overhead, calling out to him in greeting. Troi smiled, raised his hand, and waved at Aiden.

The hawk had been gone for some time, as he’d had to attend the annual avian conference. Troi couldn’t wait to hear all about his adventures.

Matisse had taken to stopping by regularly when he noticed Troi’s scent had changed. Being a reptile, he was able to distinguish subtle scents like his own and Troi’s. When he scented the pups, he made a fuss over him. Females from his nest dropped off food and brought him things for the little ones. It was such a thoughtful act, Troi didn’t have the heart to tell them the young ones already had more than they would ever use, as Garrett had gone crazy “baby shopping.”

Henrii walked out of the shadows at night, startling Troi, until he’d gotten used to it. The small man made him use the front door, announcing himself before he entered. Might as well teach the big grumpy, but lovable Irishmen a few things while he was around.

All the trees were planted, the herb garden was producing lovely new growth, and the pool had been completed, along with the adjustments for Matisse and his family.

The house was almost finished, and it was looking grand. The stained wooden trim and bookcases were currently being installed and they were magnificent. The Burchston Cliff pack had a master carpenter, and he had hand-carved all of it to Troi’s specifications. It was beautiful.

The kitchen was state-of-the-art with its stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and slate floors. Cherry wood cabinets made the counters look gorgeous, and the green earth tone walls pulled the whole thing together.

Triple-pane windows throughout the house had oak interior trim, giving the house a custom look that the windowsills complimented. It was a wonderful place, and Troi knew he’d spend the rest of his life there. Him, Garrett, and the pups. He liked the sound of that. It made him warm inside.

For the first time, Troi knew what he wanted, even though it didn’t include Talon. The man had made his choice, which excluded Troi from his life. Therefore, he would make his own way without Talon. For some reason, that hadn’t hurt him as badly as he’d thought it would.

Cleaning up the day’s debris from the construction workers, he threw the trash into the dumpster he’d rented.

Bent over, putting stuff in another bag, he heard a noise behind him. Standing and turning, he looked straight into Talon’s face.

“Hello Troi. How’s it going? I hear you’ve been busy,” the big man said, looking around.

“Yes,” Troi answered as he casually pulled his shirt down in front. Thankfully it was hanging outside his pants, so everything was covered.
